Support Groups

I don’t have any friends and I don’t socialise, am I curious about support groups/meet-ups with other autistic women. I tried one a couple of years ago, but it was holding a cafe and I really struggle being around people who are eating or drinking, so I only lasted for one session.

I was wondering if anyone has had experiences of support groups, and whether or not they help.

I am based in south west England. I did a search on this website and I don’t think there is a branch within 50 miles of where I live.

Thank you

  • I googled Autism support in the south-west and only really found support for families & children of note.  Interestingly the first Facebook link I found was for exactly the same organisation.

If you do open an account, you could at least join local area groups and be in touch with the community - and be best placed to hear of developments that way.  In some regards, Facebook has replaced the functionality of having local newspapers in that instant local information is provided, often free of charge.

  • I suppose it doesn’t help that I don’t have any social media. There are probably groups advertised on there. I have emailed the local social prescribing team and I have a doctors appointment so I can ask there too

  •   thank you for your help and advice. I appreciate it

  • In my experience it is hit & miss.  I am not in your area so I can't really be objective - but in generalised terms, these support groups tend to be charity/self-funding and are only as good as the resources available to them & the support given to them by those they seek to help.

It is also very difficult to find the right type of activities that engage a range of people with varying interests & capabilities - and I really admire people who put their heart & soul into running these groups.

I wonder if the group you attended has evolved since you attended?  Perhaps you could contact them and explain your concerns - and even suggest that they might consider holding meetings in a different venue / possibly outdoors?

It may well be worth enquiring with your local GP to see if they can signpost you in the right direction here - you could ask to be referred to a social prescriber whose function is to join you up with relevant activities in your local area - if that scheme is up and running where you are.
