When should I worry or is this normal?

Hello

before I start and as an example of my problem, this is at least the third time I've started writing a question on here only to get to the second sentence and think "have I already asked this before?" (I've had a quick check and I don't think I have)

I'm in my 50s and have lived alone for the past few years. During these years, I've slowly been realising that my memory is nowhere near as good as I'd always believed it to be.

I can't count the number of series that I've been really wanting to watch one day only to find that 3 or 4 episodes in, I start thinking "I've seen this before" while not really remembering what happened in the previous episode. And halfway through the final episode "oh yeah, I remember how this ends now". It can be really annoying and feels like I've wasted so much time on it (which I obviously have. Life should be about more than watching telly)

The thing that has prompted my question is this. A few days ago, I bruised my calf and from past experience, I think wearing compression socks can help the healing. I have tonnes of socks in my house but obviously only wear a few pairs because the others feel weird. Anyway, I've been searching since yesterday morning for these socks. I'd looked everywhere that made sense at all and a few places that wouldn't make sense. I'd considered the possibility that I'd thrown them out or even that I had imagined owning them in the first place.
I eventually found them after doing my washing this morning. The last wash was only a few days ago (probably. I can't be sure but, within the last week) I have clearly worn them very recently but have no idea when.

As is probably the case for everyone, I have an amazing memory for all the experiences that caused an emotional response or things that happen to friends or family, even when they don't remember it at all. And I can bore the crap out of anybody bringing up the subject of 80's home computers.

I have 2 theories - I'm losing my memory or I've always been like this and have subconsciously relied on other people. Either by blaming them for moving things or "putting them away for me" or by being there for me to ask "have I watched this before?"

So, the questions are - is this level of bad memory normal for autistics? Should I be considering other conditions? (I think that I'm in good mental health right now but could be wrong)

I believe it is just an age thing - the brain does start to change about this age and start to decline plus conditions such as dementure, Alzheimers etc start to present in their early stage.

I see it across the board in my age peer group so I an sure it is not autism related.

After over 50 years of intense use I would expect any machine to have a few worn gears so in the absence of any other condition it is worth accepting that your memory won't be what is was.

The following table seems most relevant to the issues you discuss:

I have most of the normal aging issues from time to time but luckily it looks like I'm not suffering dementia.
