Uncertain whether to mention I’m autistic when applying for a new job

I’ve been on the hunt for a new job for some time after packing in my job working at Lidls. I managed three and a half weeks with Lilds but had to call it a day in the end as it was getting too much for me, the loudness of customers and some people’s hostility towards me at times was difficult to deal with.

Feeling a lot better mentally since getting away from that harsh environment! Definitely not an ASD friendly place to work.

I’ve been looking for a job for a while and on Monday saw that an elderly man is looking for someone to help him around the house, take him to the shops and to hospital appointments if needed. I don’t mind doing housework, Rena and I are 50/50 with that anyway, and I love being out in my car so chauffeuring someone about appeals to me too.

To be honest helping this elderly man out just appeals to me because I’ll be making a difference to his life. On the page I read it said he’s now a widower so I’m hoping, if I am successful, then my being there might be a help to him. I emailed his daughter back, she made the application and I received a reply this morning saying about an interview with her and her dad tomorrow.

At the bottom of the email she asked if there’s anything I would like to add about myself that they might need to know and I immediately thought of the ASD. It’s now like a life threatening condition but it is something big I struggle with each day. It affects me in many different ways but even so I don’t know if it’s worth mentioning.

If you were in my position would you mention you have autism?

I’m in two minds. I know a lot of people are accepting of ASD now but there’s still a lot of people out there who have a bad impression of it and I worry they will misunderstand me if I say about it but I also feel like by not saying it’s like lying and like I have something to hide, which I don’t.

Unsure on what to do regarding this situation.

Any help and suggestions are welcomed.

  • I err on the side of "explain the reality" rather than opening up a conversation about "labels".....because frankly, most people seem uninterested with labels, but do wish to know the reality.....in  my experience

To give you an example from my life.....I DO tell people that I often talk to myself and need time to "ponder" sometimes...but I don't ever launch in with..." I am an autistic person" (or similar words and phrases. )

  • Thank you Number. This is helpful! Thank you for adding the explanation as well. I would never say “I’m autistic” and leave it at that as there is so much more to say than that.

I will write a reply this morning and hopefully if I am honest and it reads well for the receiver I will be given this opportunity.

Thanks for your response it’s been more than helpful.
