Travel insurance while on diagnosis waiting list

Hi all. My name is *****. I'm 45 and was recently referred for autism and adhd testing to see if it was a contributing factor with my ocd (and due to other reasons).

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask. I'm trying to get travel insurance. Because the autism waiting list counts as being an a waiting list with an undiagnosed issue I have to get more specialised insurance.

I've found All Clear which seems good. They will give me insurance but exclude any claim relating to my undiagnosed Autism (and ADHD) assuming I even have it. Now undiagnosed or not I can't think of any reason I'd need to make a claim for anything related to that. Worst case would be I get  panicked and need to go home but I'll only be in France and can easily book a ticket back on my money (besides. I've lived with it for 45 years and it's not been an issue ever on holiday before so it won't be now).

Does anyone have any advice about this. I suppose I'm partly worried they'll claim any claim must be related to my autism. Advice I've had is that they would have to prove it was related which is unlikely to be the case so I shouldn't worry about. (Either way. I have little choice if I want to go).

Anyone who has any advice or experience with this I would hugely appreciate it.

  • I just answered all questions honestly and explained I’m waiting for a diagnosis. They were fine with it as long as I wasn’t currently getting treatment or had hospital admissions.

    1. Is it just the being on a waiting list that means you need to seek specialist insurance? I have to do so because of other medical conditions so am used to filling in the boxes. What happens if you fill in the form and just declare you have autism and ADHD on the regular providers firms? Does it just say you can’t make a claim on those things? If so I would say just make the declaration and get your insurance. What you don’t want to do is not declare something that they see on a record later. As far as I know no insurer has ever rejected a claim based on over sharing but they have for under sharing. There’s no point paying more for specialist insurance if you don’t need it. These are just my thoughts - I’m not an expert.

    In response to your question, I have had a look through our advice and guidance pages and found this section on going on holiday which may be useful to you. The section under insurance states to check with the insurance company that the insurance meets your needs. I would suggest calling your chosen company to gain further clarification.

  • Good question. I have never thought about ASD in travel insurance terms. It would depend on what support needs you have.

    As ASD is not a medical condition or disease but a developmental condition I am unsure of how this would apply?

    I am sure someone will be along who can answer better than I have.
