Asd irritability

Hi does anybody take any meds for being very irritable . I seen risperidone for irritable mature

  • Thanks I feel that I irritable as I feel like I have to justify my self all the time to others.

  • My medical cannabis does a very good job of reducing my irritability.

This reduction in irritability isn't just something that I feel (which I definitely do). Apparently, it's also very noticeable - to the extent that my partner can tell when I've skipped doses - yikes! :)

This is not medical advice, by the way, just my experience - with several antidepressants having previously been tried, but not having suited me (ie due to side effects) or proved effective for me. Some others here, though, have found antidepressants both effective and tolerable - results can vary enormously from person to person.

As others have said, your GP is the best starting point for exploring potential sources of support (eg medication, talking therapy, referral).

  • I thought that irritable can be a trait of ASD

It is often a symptom only (I think typically as a result of anxiety) and treating it is unlikely to give lasting relief which is why I suggested getting to the cause of the problem.

From what other autists have mentioned on this site in the past, anti-depressants are not effective for them nd often come with side effects worse than the original issues so this is why I recommended a specialist who can give you informed advice and - if needed - the prescription at the same time.

Taking the step to speak to a psychiatrist can be scary but they are trained to deal with people in situations just like yours so are the best solution I can think of.

  • Thanks I thought that irritable can be a trait of ASD why does everything have to be labelled as depression . Yes I did google that but risperidone does seem in the USA to help with autism irritableness

  • does anybody take any meds for being very irritable

In most cases I have known the meds are only a sticking plaster on the problem that is causing the irratibility and often come with side effects or do not work well for the people.

I will point out that I am not a medical specialist and cannot offer medical advice by the rules of this site.

That said, your best option is to speak to your GP and ask for a fererral to a psychiatrist who should be much more skilled at getting to identify the cause of the issues that are generating your irritibility, plus there is the bonus that if medication is a good approach then they can prescribe something suited to your problem while being much more knowledgable than your GP on the subject.

To me the key diiference between a psychiatrist and psychotherapist is that the psychiatrist is better at identifying the problem and prescribing drugs if appropriate while the psychotherapist is going to help you process your issues and help you help yourself with guidance and some advice. Both are very useful.

Your GP is likely to have too little time to spend with you and too little knowledge to make a useful diagnosis, but they are useful as a gatekeeper to specialists like the psychiatrist.

If you can afford it then going directly is an option.

Good luck with with finding help.
