Support on NHS? Advocacy?

After being confused and struggling my whole life I was diagnosed with autism last year, at 29 years old. I honestly don't know how I made it that long, but I'm glad to have finally got a diagnosis. However, I'm struggling to find further support since.

My GP referred me to the community mental health team, and after 3 months of waiting, rejected my referral and said they don't support those with autism. Another waiting list later, I finally have an appointment with a local talking therapist on the NHS next week.

I want to know if anyone has had any success finding support on the NHS? Specifically, I'm applying for social housing and Access to Work, and would like an advocate to help me through the process. Additionally, specific mental health support for autistic people, rather than generic CBT, would be helpful.

Please let me know your experiences and if you've been in a similar situation. Thanks.

TL;DR: what support have you got from the NHS? Do you have access to an advocate / advocacy service? Therapy?

  • ASC, isn't really a mental health issue in itself, although it contributes to a lot of mental health issues. I don't know where you can get help from, it's very local, some places seem to have execellent support others next to none or what support there is is crap.

Is there anything on the help pages of this site that can help and guide you?

Lot's of ASC people find CBT unhelpful for them, I don't know if it's because our brains are wired differently to an NT's, or because it's applied incorrectly? I think one of the problems is that it dosen't explore why you feel the way you do and just tries to paper over the cracks, no ones brain, ND or NT is like a computer with a bit of malfunctioning code that needs a patch

Don't give up on talking therapies if ypou don't get what you need from the one you're about to see, as they can be quite limited in the amount of time they're allowed to give you and maybe what they can help you with. Lot's of us here have had various sorts of talking therapies with varying degrees of sucess, don't give up even if you end up having to go private.

You local library might have information of any local ASC groups, or they might be on social media platforms that I don't do?
