Question about Seeking Diagnosis

Hi everyone

So I'm 18 and I've just got my private referral for autism using my health insurance at work. But now I'm very confused on what I do next. I was provided with no guidance on what to actually do with the referral letter, who to go to, etc. Do I send to my NHS GP?

I am feeling very lost and struggling to find answers online. I'm sorry because it seems like a stupid question but I think I'm just feeling overwhelmed by it all. I would really appreciate any advice!! Thanks :)

  • Hi Mia -  I recently used my health insurance at work for my assessment.

They referred me onto a partner - who emailed and then set up the assessment.  So I think they will be in touch with you soon.

But if it's been more than a few days I would go back to your insurer and see if they can advise "next steps" and timeframe.  Wish you well!

  • Hello Mia, welcome to the site.

There are some quite useful articles in the help section here about what to expect from the diagnosis:

If you have a referral letter but no assessment provider given to you then I would go back to the insurance company and ask how they do this - I would imagine they have a recommended company they use where they would normally do the running to arrange and pay for it, but if not it is best to get their procedure in writing from them.

Once you know then let us know if there are still any doubts or questions and we can offer some targetted suggestions on what to do.

There is a lot to digest and process now so have a look at the articles and join us to talk about your thoughts and needs - we are a particularly good resource for helping people through this sort of thing.
