Access to work

So I recently start a new job in my dream industry. Due to this job meaning so much to me I want to put whatever reasonable adjustments in place to ensure I thrive and pass my six month probation.

I was researching some advice and guidance on some adjustments that may help me. I came across the government’s access to work program. I saw that grants and support for transport to and from work is under the scheme. I felt this could help me as I will have a significantly longer commute till I can move closer to my workplace once my current tenancy runs out.

I felt this support could be really beneficial to me as a lot of energy is taken out of me using public transport especially as my journeys will be quite long as I’ll be working unsociable hours and only buses will accomodate this. If my energy is spent on just the commute I feel this will mean I have less energy at work and my performance may be affected. I don’t want this to happen as I’m genuinely so passionate about my new job and I want to be able to remain at this job long term.

I can’t really afford for taxis to and from myself as I need to save up for m big move closer to my workplace. Therefore I have applied for this access to work to maybe implement this accomodation for me.

I have never applied or looked into benefits/support for my disability before as I felt I was too high functioning for them. However, this kind of support I feel is for anyone who genuinely needs it and I think I qualify for it. I want to be able to stick at a job long term and don’t want a longer commute to be a barrier.

I was just wondering if anyone here had applied for this scheme and if they had an experiences they felt comfortable sharing. Actually accessing support is a new thing for me but these systems and processes exist for a reason so I don’t think I should feel anxious about utilising them if I genuinely need them.
