my child won’t weight bear.

My son is 6 years old and after being ill over the weekend and start of the week he won’t bare he will not put his feet on the ground after 8 hours in A&E yesterday he’s been checked over and the doctors don’t have any concerns and most likely a sensory issue have any other parents dealt with this before? It’s not that he can’t walk he won’t my child is very sensitive to touch especially with his feet and has to wear socks 24/7 hasn’t put his bear foot on the ground for around 6 months he stood in wet Friday and since then he’s been put of walking grinding his teeth and completely refusing feet on the ground my child is non verbal and lacks communication skills he can’t tell me what he’s feeling and it’s so frustrating on what to do. Iv spoke to his school my gp and the hospital he’s got until Friday coming up to walk or stand and if he doesn’t he’s got to go back hospital for more tests, I’m frustrated , scared and unsure what to do I usually have the answers for him every time sometimes wrong but with this I’m struggling and wondering if any parent has gone through something similar with their child and what the out come was? Thank you

  • Does he have slippers to wear indoors? If not maybe you could get him some nice thick soft ones - perhaps with a fun design such as the ones that look like animals or animal feet? That would give his feet more protection than just socks (but I would let him wear socks with them as well)

From what you say it sounds like getting his feet wet triggered this issue. Was this outdoors or was there water on the floor in your bathroom or kitchen? Wearing slippers indoors will prevent his feet getting wet if the floor is wet,  and if it was outdoors you could look at getting him some protective footwear that is waterproof as well as comfortable.

If his feet are sensitive to water, how do you manage to get him to take a bath or shower? If he's ok with baths, which are warm, and the water he stood in last week was cold, maybe it's temperature as well as texture that is causing his issues. I have always suffered with cold feet and it's very uncomfortable - and if they get too cold it registers as pain. So maybe make sure his feet are always warm.

It's very difficult to advise what to do, particularly when he cannot tell you what his problem is. But try not to worry - he is very young and I don't think a short time off his feet is going to do him any harm. Let the doctors advise you on this and I'm sure it will soon resolve itself.

  • Hello ashleigh123,

Thank you for posting and telling the community what you are going through. We are sorry to hear that your child is unable to put his feet on the floor at the moment. It might be of interest to you to read our guide about 'sensory differences': www.autism.org.uk/.../all-audiences
