Seeking Advice on Support and Resources for Neurodivergent Ex-Partner in Prison

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone here has advice or resources that might help with my current situation.

My ex-partner (and father of my autistic son) is currently serving a prison sentence. To be clear, he did commit the offense he’s serving time for. However, after reviewing his police interview and knowing that both his father and son are diagnosed autistic, I’ve started to question whether his neurodivergence may have played a role in the process leading to his conviction.

Without oversharing too many details, here’s some context:

  • During his police interview, he wasn’t legally represented.
  • He appeared confused and struggled to understand some key points during the process.
  • Part of his sentencing was tied to what was perceived as a lack of empathy and “meaningful remorse” for his offense.

While we are no longer together, I can’t help but feel that had his autism been acknowledged and properly factored into his defense, he might have been better represented at trial. As a neurodivergent person myself, fairness and justice are incredibly important to me, and this situation feels unjust.

I’m looking for any guidance or resources that might help him now, even retrospectively. Are there any organizations, legal experts, or advocacy groups that focus on neurodivergence and the justice system?

Thank you so much for anything helpful you can share.
