ados assessment

hi

i have my ados assessment on wednesday (not sure if i spelt it correct).

Does anyone have any advice as to what the clinician is looking for/what they ask me? I am high masking and really worried of misdiagnosis especially as i am a verbal woman.

thanks in advance Slight smile

  • They are just looking for your reactions to the activities. Being told what to expect generally takes the point out of ADOS. So I don't think it'd be helpful for people to advise you on what to do. Other than that do what you feel internally and try not to cover up your initial thoughts/reactions. It's those they want to see.

It is however know that ADOS has it's limitations in adults, particularly high masking women but I would hope your assessor is aware of that. I think it'd be perfectly fine to tell them your concern though. If they are not a good assessor and don't take it into account I think you'd have good grounds to complain and request an assessment with someone else.

  • Hi Mia,

It's probably not a good idea to know in advance about this test because they need the spontaneity, I think. If you knew what was going to happen you'd tie yourself in knots second guessing yourself.

Just try to be yourself (not in the way that neurotypical people tell you when going on date, I mean try not to mask nor try to 'please' the assessor). If you are used to supressing your stims in public, try not to supress them. But don't make them up. If you don't stim, then don't make one up.

It's a strange experience but never unpleasant.

I wish you the best of luck and hope to hear about it next Wednesday.

  • I think much of the purpose of ADOS is to figure out if you are masking. There are various exercises designed to gauge things like imagination but most of it is really about how you interact with the assessor.

The ADOS section of my diagnostic report spoke heavily about my body language, facial expression, use of gestures, reciprocity in conversation etc and I felt during the assessment that the SLT was trying different things to gauge if I was masking.

They should probably also get you to complete the CAT-Q test as part of your assessment (specifically to measure masking).
