Our community Christmas Gogglebox

I thought it might be fun to do our own version of Goggle box over the Christmas period, so post a list of what you have been watching the last couple of days and a comment about it.

I have watched:

Trading Places (All 4) - A movie set at Christmas time, but not a typical "Christmas movie". Great fun if you're not bothered about the occasional non-PC comment and girls being top-less (Different times!)  Some great comic acting, plus the message that environment can greatly influence how people behave.

Christmas Come Dine with me from 2014 (All 4) - This was a celebrity episode with 4 participants; Shaun Ryder, the girl who played Rosie Webster in coronation street, and 2 other people I'd never heard of. It was a nice cosy show with a chrismassy feel, and the participants were really nice to each other (unlike the usual acerbic comments in the every day come dine with me!)

Star Wars episode IV A new hope (ITV X) - OMG, Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher look so young! This of course was Harrison Ford's first movie star role, and he really deserved the break - what a great actor! And kudos to the poor actors who had to walk around for hours in hot costumes playing Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and the droids.

  • Great thread.

1, I too watched trading places but just before Christmas to get me in the mood. It is by far my favourite Christmas film ever (apart from non PC bits as Pixiefox mentioned above. This is a film guaranteed to lift my mood with some amazing comedy moments.

2,  I watched the first 3 ever episodes of Gavin and Stacey and then the new Christmas finale (that has been said a few times so I’m taking that with a pinch of salt). Some brilliant performances but also some very moving scenes particularly where Smithy nearly married his controlling partner who didn’t really love him. He realised after 17 years that he loved Ness and went to find her.

3,  I watched the original Ghostbusters movie with no sound as there were a few family members present. I couldn’t stop watching and probably came across as a bit rude but I couldn’t stop. There is something about catching something on tv that you haven’t seen for some time even though you could probably choose to watch any time. Loved the special effects of their time which makes it all the more special for me.

I also plan to watch Jason and the Argonauts, Weird Science, Castaway, Big and Turner and Hooch. Now Pixiefox has mentioned it some Star Wars also and hopefully Andor on Disney plus.

  • Which tv channel or app did you watch the original Ghostbusters on?

I was thinking of watching the two latest ones - Afterlife and Frozen Empire, but the reviews aren't that great and they are not free to watch - you have to rent or buy them. Have you seen those movies?

  • I don’t believe I have seen the others sorry. The original was on normal tv and I’m not sure which channel as I was at my in-laws, it was either the 23rd or the 24th December if that helps?

  • Thank you, I checked and it was on BBC so is probably on iPlayer now, however I don't have a TV licence so I can't watch it. Never mind, I'm enjoying the old Star Wars movies, and actually I watched the original Ghostbusters movies so many times when I was younger that I know most of the dialogue.

"Where do those stairs go? They go up!"

"Ray, when someone asks you 'Are you a god?' you say - YES! "
