Referral for behavioral therapy

I received a referral for behavioral therapy. Does anyone have experience with it? Is it stressful? I’m not diagnosed, but received two papers from my therapist with suspected autism and I know I’m gonna get a letter from my health insurance company. I’m stressed and anxious I don’t know what to expect, living in Germany.

  • I had a course of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) during the period leading up to my assessment. For me, as for some other autistic people, that form of therapy wasn’t particularly helpful. That’s not to say it wouldn’t be helpful for you, especially if it’s tailored to meet your neurodivergent needs. Just sharing my experience.

You might find it helpful to borrow or buy this book, which you’ve probably seen me recommend before.

It’s genuinely - in my opinion - an excellent idea to read it before starting on a therapy journey of any kind.

It includes discussion of various types of therapy and counselling, together with advice on choosing the right therapist or counsellor - all from an autistic person's viewpoint:

The Autistic Survival Guide to Therapy

In my case, based on the book and my past experience with CBT, I chose to have post-diagnosis counselling with a neurodivergent counsellor.

  • Thank you. Is it sort of therapy to teach me make eye contact and suppress stimming or other socially in acceptable behavior or something else?
