Hi, this is my 1st post (on behalf of my son)
I am the father and carer for my 34 year old son.
As well as autism, he has a very rare chromosome disorder, which, in simple terms means he has complex learning, comprehensive and expressive difficulties. His reading age is appropriately that of an 8 year old.
My / his enquiry revolves around oral hygiene and dental routines.
My son has fairly severe sensory issues with regards to putting things inside his mouth apart from food and drinks. In saying that, certain foods and beverages definitely cause anxieties and issues.
He has always found it hard tolerating tooth brushing despite trying very many pastes, as well as no pastes at all.
We have tried very many brushes over the years, even including some expensive electrical alternatives at his request, which were particularly badly tolerated because of a combination of the sound and vibration effects.
Unfortunately this has recently resulted in his 3rd general anaesthetic operation for multiple extractions at hospital.
So my/our question is:
Are there any other members who struggle with similar oral sensory difficulties?
If so, do you have any suggestions that may help as we try and move forward?
As you can probably appreciate, the whole busy hospital general anaesthetic experience, was very difficult for my son.
Something he wants to avoid if possible going forward.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read.
Richard
