My first single:

I remember when rock was young

Me and Suzie had so much fun

Holding hands and skimming stones

Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own...

But the years went by and the rock just died

Suzie went and left me for some foreign guy

Long nights crying by the record machine

Dreaming of my Chevy and my old blue jeans.....

Elton John ... almost there but can't quite get it ..

Correct. I was about 12 I think when I got this single and I wasn't a particular fan of Elton, I just liked that song. At 13 I went through a phase of liking David Cassidy, at 14 I was into Pink Floyd, at 15 it was Queen, then at 16 I discovered Bowie. There were so many good artists and bands in the 70s and 80s.
