Driving license question!

Hi, 

So I applied for my provisional license wheni was 17 I got my aspergers diagnosis last year when I was 22 so in light of my  diagnosis do I need to apply again? I've looked on this website but it only says what to do if you have the diagnosis first!!!

  • I consulted a number of people over this issue and the advice even from the DVLA was ambiguous. The DVLA state that "You must tell DVLA if you have Aspergers syndrome and it affects your driving."

    My son has Aspergers, but has a pass certificate in tractor driving and has been certified by a police officer instructor for his CBT. He's been driving off road since he was 7 and is clearly able.

    The guidence to me seems clear. It's notify 'if your condition affects your driving.'

    My son's condition doesn't affect his driving; so as I understand it, he's not obligated.

    My GP rarely sees my son and frankly judging by his comments in the past i'm not sure he fully appreciates the extent of his condition at all. Surely each person is different and if you think their maybe an issue, then it should deffinately be declared.

  • I think it is wise to inform Dvla just in case.  They will probably contact your gp but as long as you are  not taking medication that can affect your driving I would assume you will be okay.  A friend of mine was on meds, and the Dvla gave him a 3 year license which is reviewed thereafter.

    It is wise to disclose to your insurers as they are  renowned for nullifying claims if they can, and not disclosing your condition could be used against you.

    Better safe than sorry.

  • I'd be interested to know this.  Seeing as I have been driving for years before getting a diagnosis I didn't think it was worth announcing it.  You only have to not drive if your GP says you are affected by your condition and advises against it. (How many GPs would know what you drive like!)
