Does anyone else get anxious when they hear a knock on the front door?

Hi all. Wave

Do you get all anxious when someone knocks on your front door and you just want them to go away? The abruptness and unknown makes me really tense. Needless to say, I never answer my door unless I am expecting someone or a package. If it's important they can text me (should they have my number) or drop a note through my letter box or something.

I also don't answer phone calls from unknown or numbers that I don't recognise. If it's important, they usually text or leave a voicemail.

  • I am always more anxious on Halloween night with all the trick or treating going on. Thankfully, we rarely get trick or treaters coming to our door nowadays.

    Halloween

Every Halloween, we display a polite "no thank you" notice in our front window / by our front door. Many police forces offer downloadable signs (featuring their logos) that can be printed off. A good place to find these is in their Facebook pages in the run up to Halloween, though you might also be able to find them by searching their websites. A good example:

    Hampshire: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/contentassets/48d3c2f4abac42b4b4cd5dc823ae8680/trickortreat.pdf

    Year-round

For deterring unwanted callers in general, your local council and/or police force may offer a small "official" sticker or sign. Many other versions are also available online or you could create your own. However, some (including me) might prefer the official version featuring the council and/or police force logo, as it should be more immediately recognisable from a distance, given that other households within the same area will be displaying the same version.

For example, this sticker can be requested from West Sussex county council:
