Workplace adjustments

Please could I have some advice regarding workplace adjustments?

I was diagnosed earlier this year, I’ve worked in an office job for several years which suits me perfectly & I have no issues regarding my actual job.

Following my assessment I’ve had an occupational health assessment with suggestions & several meetings regarding any issues I have or anything I feel I need. The two main areas that have come up are sensory based with a request for a new chair & a desk lamp for more appropriate lighting. However I seem to be at a standstill now with nobody actually actioning these adjustments & I keep being bounced between managers with no actual resolution as I continue to struggle. Whilst the “easier” adjustments from my assessment have been made, it feels that the ones that cost money are being ignored.

Am I correct in thinking that the two things above are covered as reasonable adjustments? And therefore should legally be made where possible? I’ve been nudged to look into the access to work scheme this week which feels like yet another delay & pushes me to believe even more that this is money related. Is there a way I can approach this?

My approach would be to write to HR/People team and ask them who you should address your requests for updates to and who will be responsible to approve & organise the purchase of the items.

Keep the updates weekly, chasing for a timescale (keep these polite) and make sure all the requests are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Appropriate, Reasonable and Time bound) and keep sending copies of these emails to your personal email for a backup. This means if they ever try to get rid of you because you are too much of a pain then you have a detailed history of your requests being witheld.

I don't think the chair request is related to an autistic requirement but please let me know if you think it is - this is typically used for someone with a physical need.

The request for lighting is reasonable unless if means ripping out all the ceiling lights in the office. If you need something for your desk then ask if you can find it, buy it and expense it - much simpler. At worst buy it yourself (ask for approval for the installation) and make your workspace better.

  • Thank you for your advice! I think that was my concern as well that I am starting to feel like a nuisance & hate making a fuss so making sure I keep a constant back up & trail will be really helpful.

I absolutely agree it’s not a typical requirement, it’s something I have requested as I also have hyper mobility & the current chair I have offers no support & is causing pain so I’ve put this forward as a suggestion to also enable me to sit cross legged when needed.

The lighting was intended to just be a USB plug in lamp for the desk so I will certainly put forward buying it myself & claiming the expense back!

    Thank you again.
