I wish people would use more specific language to describe the nature of relationships.

I’ve learned the hard way that people who tell me they are my friend really mean that I’m an acquaintance they sort of like or I’m a colleague. Not actually a friend.

Why are people so vague and misleading about these things.

  • This used to be a bugbear of mine. I couldn't wrap my head around it. 

    I decided to keep it straightforward for myself - we are either friends (i.e. we're pretty close, you're in my support network) or we're acquaintances. None of the complicated "work friends" or "school friends" stuff.

    I could have admittedly communicated things more clearly with people, or been honest and said that ambiguity doesn't help.
