Upcoming assessment this month

Hello,

I have been on here before, but in the past i was told i had not much hope at all

of getting an assessment due to being in Dumfries and Galloway (the only region

in Scotland that doesn't do its own adults assessment service for autism) However,

now i have been told that i have been considered to qualify for being assessed and

reffered to another region (possibly Glasgow, but i don't know). I've had a brief assessment

by the mental health specialist who will be doing the assessment, along with others, a couple

of years ago, but due to my memory problems i can't remember much about it!!!!! My initial

thoughts were to write down everything that i could think of that i struggled with on a piece

of paper - as i know that there will be a time limit for this initial assessment and you can

never fit everything into an appointment! I'm really good a forgetting things due to being on

lots of medication for epilepsy and am finding it equally difficult trying to explain neuro things

to people who don't struggle with neuro difficulties. Any advice on how to prepare for an

assessment would be welcome. How long I will have to wait to hear whether my case will be

successful enough to be referred to another region i don't know. I hope it is, because i feel

that it means that it will give hope for other people. But as always with the NHS it is a case

of just waiting. Many thanks, K

  • Hello. Prior to the assessment definitely write down things and leave notes on your phone reminding you to take the paper with you when the time comes. Remembering things is challenging with some medications. Your assessors will be understanding though so don't worry about that. They are very professional and caring during the assessment process, that was my experience and my brothers was the same.
