Learning to drive

Hello. I'm learning to drive but I have autism and anxiety and am struggling, more so wish the theory test than the driving itself though 2 hour long tests so exhaust me and make me anxious. The theory test is very hard. I don't really understand the hazard perception side of it, but I've passed the practical quite a few times which I'm pleased about.

My Dad and Mum say I'm a good driver and if I keep trying I'll pass but I'm not so sure. A part of me wants to give this up now but I really do want to get my licence because I love driving and I love cars, especially the classic cars. I've bought myself a Ford Capri 2.0 S which I'm very excited to drive but I need the license first.

I've got myself a bit anxious thinking about it now and had a meltdown this afternoon. I so desperately want to get through my driving test but I feel like I've hit a brick wall which I can't get past.

If you have any advice that you think might help please feel free to share it. I'll be eternally grateful.

  • Hello Sen,

driving can be hard when you are autistic but it is very rewarding having the freedom to go places. You have done well to pass the practical and hazard perception is just a matter of experience which will also come to you. I too love classic cars and drive a 1976 Series 3 Land Rover for fun. I drove to Suffolk and back early this year, four hundred and forty miles and loved it. I hope you have fun in your Capri.

  • Hello LucyLandRover, great name! Smiley

Thank you, I really do hope so, hopefully next year I'll be able to get on top of this side of my driving and then pass my test. Thank you I really do appreciate it. Wow I love the sound of your Land Rover, I think the older ones are best, they look and sound amazing. Such a distinct sound and appearance. My Dad is a big Land Rover fan. Earlier in the year he was restoring a Land Rover Defender 110 which was ex army. Very rotten at the time but superb again in the end.

Four hundred and forty miles must have been a great time in yours! So far I've covered just over a mile in my Capri on private land. Smiley
