What disables us?

I've been following what the BBC Ouch! website is saying about David Cameron's Disability Confidence Campaign, launched in July. This includes an article by Phil Friend that advocates that disabled people should be helped to identify what disables them, so they are better able to remove barriers.

It all sounds a bit like the Social Model with the addition of a DIY option.

This proposes that disabled people should be brought together to learn how to develop confidence and find out what's out there that could help them cope better.

My concern with autism, in this respect, is that I keep asking on here for that kind of help. We don't know enough about what practical options are there for self-help. Maybe we could use this forum more effectively to do some of this exploring.

All I see on the NAS website and elsewhere is the triad of impairments. The things which affect us all daily aren't being discussed. So I don't see any leadership on this coming from NAS.

But if other participants are interested we could help each other via this discussion forum to explore what might be enabling strategies.

Any thoughts.
