Many autistic adults may seek psychological therapy support in their lifetime. Previous research studies suggest gaps in provisions and support available to the autistic population. To date, there has been very little qualitative research directly looking at autistic clients' experiences of therapy.
Previous studies use quantitative, pre-populated questionnaires which have the potential to miss key information and nuances perceived by autistic clients. This study explores autistic adults' personal experiences of psychological therapies they have received for low mood, depression or anxiety; and involves 60-min online interviews.
We hope to identify the biggest barriers and facilitators individuals face in the therapeutic environment. The results will hope to inform therapists of adaptations which help autistic adults fully benefit from psychological therapies.
