Why can I hear my neighbour's taps...a rant

I live in a ground floor flat and can hear my neighbour's water gushing through the pipes, so she must be able to hear mine too. I don't know if it bothers her as much as it does me - I keep a big distance between myself and neighbour - but I never hear this noise at my parent's semi-detached house. I can also hear my neighbour  shout at her dog, 'oh, be quiet, get DOWN!!!', she shouts. I hear the noise of furniture moving, washing machine, and general domestic noise. And this neighbour  is not what would be considered 'noisy', apart from the odd burst of super loud music, and the time when she argued with her boyfriend ALL night long - I can never forget that!.

I am sensitive to household noise, but I think the problem is poor sound insulation. Hearing her water is just the limit!. Is this the case in all flats? I have OCD, so have the water on a lot - I would hate  living below someone with OCD, like myself!. There is no privacy. Is the Autism Act looking at housing and autism?

  • I have been thinking much the same thing. The time my neighbour stayed up all night in February this year, while her boyfriend shouted at her, kept me awake ALL night. I was so tired the next day I had to cancel a really important meeting. If she dare thinks of doing that again, I will slam the doors so loud she won't know whay has struck the earth!. I am not putting up with that again. At the time it happened, I had not been in my flat for long, and so was rather timid. I have since hardened up, and won't put up with it if it happens again. Why should I? I am entitled to a good night's sleep; it would be bad enough if the arguing carried on until midnight, but they were still at it at 4am in the morning!. I would never argue all night long, maybe this is another 'neuro-typical' affliction that I can never understand. I have my routines, and nights are for sleeping, but if I can't sleep, I don't invite some noisy tosser to spend the night, spoiling the peace for my neighbours. I am polite and considerate when it comes to neighbours, perhaps too considerate!. I am so quiet, and my neighbour told my dad she hardly hears me - but I hear her a lot!. I think if someone with children moved in above me, I would go insane.
