Newly Diagnosed

Hi,

I have just been diagnosed with autism and was wondering if people could share how they found getting their diagnosis and also things they found useful for their family/partners to do so they could better understand autism.

Thanks

  • I was hugely relieved to get my diagnosis, it explained why I am as I am, it also was a validation of my experiences. Knowing that I was autistic allowed me to forgive myself for past 'failures' and missed opportunities. From realising that I was most probably autistic I have discussed how autism affects me with other members of my family, as I have an autistic adult daughter, diagnosed the day after me, it was reasonably easy to get information across, as there were two of us 'peddling' the same story. I bought quite a few books on autism, especially in adults, which helped me recognise which traits related to me. However, though all my family acknowledge that I am autistic, I have difficulties in exhibiting autistic behaviour and it being accepted as such. This is frustrating.
