Downregulating

I've just be struck by the idea that, like toddlers that are overstimulated, that we too (as Aspies), we overstimulated need to regularly downregulate our nervous systems.

After a decade of struggling to work in London and having so many issues with my body have realised the stress and tension I put myself through on a daily basis.

So searching for experiences that stimulates the para-sympathetic nervous system and calm us is so important

  • I live in London too. The high density population and traffic noise are problematic for me. Public transport is a nightmare!

At home, to limit outside noise, I keep my windows closed unless it gets too warm. I relax by focusing on a hobby or pastime I enjoy - getting lost in word puzzles, recorded music, reading, a film or TV programme I enjoy. I limit the amount of caffeine I ingest, just enough to keep me alert without the jitters! I have tried to create an indoor environment that is soothing, being surrounded by things I enjoy looking at that give me comfort (collections, photographs, artwork on my walls). Some people like to have plants to have a bit of nature indoors.

That's just what works for me, I realise everyone is different!

  • I feel I should limit my caffeine, but with a suspected sleep disorder, I rely on it to keep me going, especially when at work.
