Buses

I have the full TV series of on the buses, on DVD and the three feature films.  It never ages.

The old buses were great with both drivers and conductors and being able to get on and off from the back.

A few weeks ago I was on a bus which went past a bus garage which looked just like the one being used on, On the buses, it brought back memories.

I love On The Buses. Which is your favourite of the films? Its close but for me it has to be Holiday On the Buses

I love old bus garages, you hardly ever see them these days. I read that a lot of the series was filmed in Wood Green in North London where I used to live

I enjoy all three films equally, holiday on the buses is almost like a precursor to Hi DE Hi.

I also like looking at bus stations and they have developed over the years.  Some are booming full of people, other are dead, almost deserted because the people and buses have gone elsewhere.

I think that is a metaphor for the modern world. Everything is very clean and well built but mostly unused, mainly because people can't afford to use it or are too busy with other things. What a sad state of affairs.

I think the dirty, scruffy run down places of the old days had a lot more character 

I have a particular interest in Sheffield bus station because I came to Sheffield in the 1980s and the bus station was very very busy, the heart of the social community, buses were cheap because the socialist city council had frozen bus fares and subsidized them from the rates.  There were even late night buses at midnight, 2am, 4am.  The station was a filthy hell hole that was falling apart at the seams.

Around 1990 the station was completely rebuilt.  And it lost its character and spirit.  Bus fares went up, doubled tripled, when the subsidies were ruled illegal.  Bus passenger numbers went down, services were cut.  A new supertram system was built that didn't go through the station.  A new bus/rail/supertram interchange was built outside the city at the new Meadowhall shopping centre.

The result is that they have a clean well built bus station that's almost deserted 24/7.

Yes the deserted ones are sometimes the most interesting. I spent most of my life in Slough and we had the bus station where the opening sequence of The Office was filmed. Its gone now and is a giant Tesco.
