Chat Groups

So most people in my social or parental social circles now rely on WhatsApp chat groups or similar.

My issue is, the constancy of them. If I don't look at my phone for half a day I come back to reams of updates.

I have them muted, but to try and wrap my head around a conversation I'm met with essentially a giant list of 'yes I know', or 'that is so interesting', or other puns, or little jokes.

It's fine for the odd chat, but when it's multiplied across many groups and then compounded by being over 3/4/5 different apps, as well as the need to have email (I have at least 5 accounts to check), oh and then text messages to!

It's so overwhelming.

Should note, given the orderly nature of this forum, it's the only community I feel carm being part of.

How do you feel about Comms. today?

  • I only use WhatsApp with individuals, never groups. I know I can't handle group chats. I use email too. Both methods are good for me, plus I like to exchange photos with my online friends.

I use Direct Message with 2 online friends on Instagram. Again, we can send photos to each other.

I never used Facebook and I never will. I don't feel comfortable with that network. I also don't do Twitter or TikTok. I occassionally write comments on YouTube. I used to write more but, through no fault of my own (I write non-controversial comments), I have had some really nasty trolls.

One guy didn't like that I reported the truth about the serious results of a seating collapse at a Pink Floyd concert. I was sctually there and I spoke with security who told me what really happened. This troll was so vile he told me to f***off! I stood up for myself and then reported him to YouTube, but the experience with him upset me a great deal.

Another time, I mentioned having cancer and how much the NHS helped me (it was in response to someone else praising the NHS). Someone replied to my comment saying that I'm draining the NHS because of the money spent! Nasty and cruel. I stood up for myself (again) and pointed out that I've been paying my taxes here for decades.

I felt unsafe using YouTube (I get a lot of enjoyment from videos) so I rarely make comments anymore.

In summary, I like social media for one-to-one private interactions but I stay away from the general public.

  • This is why I got rid of whatsapp! Then my smartphone. Bring back carrier pigeon and snail mail!

  • Email, text messages, phone calls (by arrangement) and in person.  These are the only means through which I communicate with people.  This is quite enough for me.....all the other stuff is way too pervasive and intrusive for my taste.
