If anyone has a special interest that faded / fizzled out over time or even just ended abruptly, what was is? And why did it "die"? And do you have any that revived over time?

Ahh I think I've alwys had at least 2 to 4 "long stays" running concurrently with a few that spark up alongside but then maybe don't stick properly for whatever reason.
Yeah, it's that feeling of betrayal that did it for me too. It's sad. I do feel less bad about leaving this one behind than I might have done if I'd just lost interest for no particular reason though!
It was always strictly one at a time for most of my life, but over the last three years I've finally been able to balance a few special interests at once. I don't know what has changed in my brain to allow this, but I'm glad it did because having one intense interest at a time was always a bit too all-consuming
Mine tend to end abruptly only when something else suddenly comes along and grabs my attention instead.
Oh that's interesting. So just one at a time?
One of mine that recently rose from the ashes like a phoenix was paleontology. When I became a teenager I had kinda shelved it long term when trying to fit in with peers at school. I almost completely forgot about it until my own kid pointed out the Pyroraptor in JWDominion was more like a real Velociraptor than the velociraptors because it actually has feathers... that was like accidentally lighting a stick of dynamite in me thinking it was a candle. lol
Mine tend to end abruptly only when something else suddenly comes along and grabs my attention instead. For example, I made a blog in 2014 and for more than a year i was obsessed with it - all day every day was spent perfectly curating the blog and posting on it etc. I reached 10,000 followers in that first year, but then suddenly I developed a special interest in reading and lost all motivation for the blog just like that. So I deleted the whole thing - thousands of hours of work just gone in an instant. But the thing is I don't regret deleting it because the intense interest in blogging was simply gone and therefore any attachment I had to the blog was gone too.
The special interests I have right now though have been steady for three years so far, so I can't imagine ever not being into them anymore, but who knows!
Aw that's really sad, I totally understand though.
One of mine that just sorta ended abruptly was Pokemon. The games almost always had some kind of retro compatibility so you could keep your old fave pokemon, but the day they stopped that it was just such a huge middle finger to the original fanbase that it ended Pokemon at Ultra Moon as far as I'm concerned.
Yes- Harry Potter. I think the author's opinions on gender identity are well-known and I'm not going to discuss them here but that was absolutely the thing that put me off for good. It'll always have nostalgia value for me because it got me through secondary school but I don't think it'll ever go back to being a special interest for me now.
