Book/Toy idea for non-verbal toddler

Hi,

My daughter is still non verbal, at 30 months.  She doesn't make many sounds and rarely babbles spontaneously.  I am looking if there are any books or toys that would be helpful to use with her to try an encourage her talk.  She currently has a few traits that could suggest she may be autistic, we are just keeping an open mind, especially as my wife has just been diagnosed with autism.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to encourage her communication it would be much appreciated.

  • I would suggest focusing less on talking and more on communicating.  Condider using signs and gestures, and simple pictures.  Show her how to point to the things she wants, follow her eye gaze to see what she's interested in, and engage with the behaviour she uses to communicate.  For example, I knew a young autistic girl who would sniff things she liked, so I would sniff things I wanted her to share, and when she sniffed me, I sniffed her to show that I liked her too.
