Hello,

I am a 43 year old female and was diagnosed with autism last week. The assessor said she would recommend this diagnosis replaces a previous incorrect one of BPD. I don’t know how to feel or what to do now. Do I tell people? My family? I have just began a new job, do I tell my manager? Would this help?
The assessor told me they had very little doubt I was autistic but I have thoughts that perhaps they got it wrong or somehow I faked it without realising. I want to be 100% sure, I can’t be.

How have other people felt or managed after diagnosis?

  • First of all, I would say just take a bit of time to digest the diagnosis yourself before telling people. I was diagnosed in February, and looking back now feel like I told a number of people I didn’t really need to.

To be clear, I haven’t had any negative experiences. Just on reflection I think I would have taken a bit more time and considered who I told more.

  • Thank you. The adjustments could well be helpful. I don’t think I will tell people yet but I have that option now.

  • BPD is a very common thing for women with autism to be misdiagnosed with. As for telling people, do you have to? Do you want to? Do they all need to know? Does work need to know? If you want to make adjustments it can be helpful. Similarly, if you already have problems at work, this can be helpful. For me, I told my manager, and much later, one or two colleagues when it came up naturally in conversation.
