Running on empty

I feel constantly burnt out, especially as I'm getting older (mid 50s & only discovered a year ago I'm on the spectrum.) I try to rest the following day but that doesn't seem to be enough. Does anyone else struggle the same? If so what helps you to 'completely' recharge?

  • Hi, I am struggling with severe burnout at moment and I was also recently diagnosed as autistic- I now realise I have been running on less than 5% battery for years, never really recharging- I’ve had some time off work now but I don’t feel recharged at all yet- it takes so long and maybe i’m not doing the right things... in the past being out hiking allowed me to mentally recharged but joint issues (and now on top of that having lost too much weight) have made that impossible the past 3 years... I really struggle with ‘not doing anything productive’ so i am having a very hard time as I cannot engage with either of my special interests (hiking and science)- do you have any special interests you enjoy? Are you able to take some time away from work and the stresses of life? I don’t have an answer really but please be kind to yourself and take the time to rest and recharge as in the long term always pushing yourself can be very detrimental to health and wellbeing. Recovering from burnout takes a long time and initially whenever I had a day or only short time off I would actually feel even worse as Iwas so exhausted and just collapsed whenever I stopped- that made me think rest was not good for me- but don’t be discouraged if rest doesn’t feel right at first. I’ve been told that resting and relaxation is a skill that is learnt and acquired and I think it is different for everyone

  • Thankyou Ann for your kind suggestions & advice x
