My rather horrid stim!

Oh dear….. I chew.
I chew my tongue and feel totally ashamed when I’m caught doing it. I’m 69 for goodness sake and I have done this all my life.
When I was working I guess the very business of my job kept this in check and I’d just do it when alone.
Nowadays I can do it for days on end when very stressed and it’s not until a bemused grandchild asks me what I’m eating that I realise I’m doing it.
I know it looks horrid ( yes, I’ve been told this too) but I just wanted to know if I have any fellow ‘chewers’ on here!
We have a rather difficult funeral to attend tomorrow and I know I must keep this in check so this will add to the stress of the event as well.

The chewing does relax me at times though so it does serve a purpose!

  • Hello, I’m new here and am trying to get a handle on whether I’m on the spectrum or just a sort of idiosyncratic ocd person. But one of my “stims” ( this will be hard to explain) grinding my teeth but also trying to be symmetrical about it and counting. I can do the same with my tongue if I want absolutely no visible sign of stimming. I’m calling it stimming because I just learned that terminology and it might fit. Idk. I’m constantly doing this or something like it every waking moment as far as I can tell. I used to be a lot noisier about things.  Not sure what I’m looking for. I suppose if anyone can relate?

  • like John, I am new here and not sure if Iam; but I definitely stim.  I chew pens a lot, but it can be finger nails, and as a child I'd happily chew on paper, and I'll even chew on the neck of a tshirt too (more rubbing it along my bottom lip than chewing).

I've known I was doing it, but never considered it a thing. Since covid and working from home, it drives my partner nuts. She says i do it all the time. I didnt realise quite how much.

Also doodle a lot (not sure if that is a thing) but i endlessly doodle whilst on calls.

And more recently ive taken to squeezing a stress ball (but sometimes i find i am rubbing that on my lips instead of squeezing it).
