My rather horrid stim!

Oh dear….. I chew.
I chew my tongue and feel totally ashamed when I’m caught doing it. I’m 69 for goodness sake and I have done this all my life.
When I was working I guess the very business of my job kept this in check and I’d just do it when alone.
Nowadays I can do it for days on end when very stressed and it’s not until a bemused grandchild asks me what I’m eating that I realise I’m doing it.
I know it looks horrid ( yes, I’ve been told this too) but I just wanted to know if I have any fellow ‘chewers’ on here!
We have a rather difficult funeral to attend tomorrow and I know I must keep this in check so this will add to the stress of the event as well.

The chewing does relax me at times though so it does serve a purpose!

  • Good morning Gilly.

With some careful focused thought, I can transpose a manifesting stim from one thing/place/activity to another.  This is an invaluable skill for me.  My most covert and "acceptable" stim is to very gently and slowly rub the pad of my thumb on the side of my index finger when my right hand is loosely folded into a near fist shape.  Sometimes, during an effort to transfer the stim, I can actually stop it all together = this feels really odd when it is achieved = more akin to mindfulness / complete body relaxation = OK when I'm on my own, but utterly disrupts my speach or thought patterns if it occurs when I am with others so can be quite awkward.

I do chew my tongue.  It is a stim that accompanies my being when I am deeply lost in concentration - so thankfully only occurs when I am alone or with other people with whom I feel entirely comfortable.....so they don't care.....and I can take the well-meaning teasing that ensues.

As you rightly say, we stim for a reason - you chew your tongue because it relaxes you.  This is NOT a bad thing.  Stay relaxed about it.  Whilst normies may think it looks odd, I have no doubt that I would perceive it as charming and a demonstration that you are a wholesome and genuine human soul - don't hide your light under a bushel [disambiguation - a bushel in this context is an upside down wooden bucket]

    Thanks for sharing.
