Autistic at 26

Hello,

I have recently been diagnosed with Autism at the age of 26. I live with my partner, who I have been with for just over 8 years. Since adulthood I can not be alone and always need to be with someone, especially at night. I cannot drive because I could not face taking my practical test, and I work full time as a TA. My partner also works full time but often changes their shifts around my working hours so I am not alone outside of work. Sometimes, I am too anxious to get the bus to work if my partner cannot take me, so I end up spending a lot of money on Ubers. I am too anxious to prepare any hot food, so my partner does all of this. They also support me with my mental health, such as anxiety, depression and PTSD. We are wondering is they would qualify as a carer for me? Initially, we did not think so, but people we know have said otherwise. I am also wondering if I would possibly qualify for any benefits and if so, which ones. This is all very new to me so I have absolutely no idea what I would be looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Well by the sounds of it you have a psychological aversion to various stressors and environments, and you have a neurological condition that means that you have social-impairment, sensory/sensitivity, and narrow/focus (that can affect situational awareness and spacial awareness).
So taking that into consideration, you have a shot at; PIP and Blue Badge; Not to mention a reasonable adjustment at work. I do also believe that you are have a shot at securing a ’carer’ status for your husband.
I would recommend that you talk to Citizens Advice, so that you have an advocate to help you with the bureaucracy, your husband may not have the experience to navigate the paperwork..:)
