Headaches and Autism

So I have suffered with migraines since I was 12…. They are very closely linked with my time of the month… usually the days leading to my period inhave blurred vision which is my warning sign to take tablets before a full blown migraine comes on.

but I have these weird cluster headaches…. They are not migraines… they are completely different, i feel like my head is in a vice but since looking into the fact an most likely autistic I realise they headaches are caused by the intense stress of life at times…. Has anyone else had this?? Like headaches are directly linked to my autism

  • Migraines I had regularly right up until my late thirties.

If you hold a lot of tension in your neck and shoulders you can get some awful headaches. Relaxation techniques and trigger point release can work wonders.

  • Yes, stopping all the hormonal cycling is most important to me too. That's why I'm on high dose progestins.

  • They can also be caused by stress too. I am sorry to hear of that. I get them, the only thing that can be done is to try your best to just sleep through them.

  • I have them all the time. I think a lot of neurotypicals do too. So dont think it is linked.

They are horrible, maybe use ethernet and get wifi switched off, and make sure you dont live too close to mobile phone masts.

A lot of women are suffering from migraines these days.

  • If something like Xanax helps then the problem is most likely stress and - IMO - can be resolved by working out how to either change your surroundings, expand perceptions and / or understanding of the world, and might involve planning a better future to work toward.

Many times we can become immersed in life in such a way that we just wake up and repeat. Taking control of ones life is about first examining values (real ones, deeper ones rather than naked 'virtues' people pretend to 'value' for the sake of approval or acceptance).

I can't diagnose, headaches aren't really something to ignore. This might be one idea to try out of many. Anti-depressants don't work for most autistics, they're designed (from what I can tell) to help the neurotypical brain. But there is a small majority who've found them useful.

What's beneficial to you? What's draining? What's creating sensory overload? Are there relationships in your life you need to take a break from (any one other than children). How kind are you to yourself? There could always be a possibility of a nutritional issue - a lack of something or an allergy. My son would get these headaches from taking too much Vitamin D in various forms, for instance.

  • I get headaches. Often from eye strain, or light sensitivity, or being over tiered, or if I spike my blood sugar to high, or it drops too low

I have found glasses that change into sunglasses automatically help, also regulating my diet to be healthy with much more vegetables has maintained a healthy blood sugar level, I take breaks when I work on my laptop, and I go outside first thing in the morning to trigger my body clock so I should sleep better the following night time

Good luck, hope you feel better

  • I get stress-related headaches all the time, including after long sleeps.

I stick with Paracetamol for relief.

  • That’s interesting Renee I have also been diagnosed with Labyrinthitis and when ever I have a bug or a headache it causes dizziness which usually leads to nausea.

yes the headaches are definitely stress induced but because I wasn’t aware of my autism before I couldn’t work it out cause I felt like things weren’t that bad even though I was stressed with day to day stuff there was never anything major

  • I get similar.

For me I get headaches and dizziness and balance problems, all linked but all seemingly related to my autism. I've had scans and tests and no cause was ever found so they think it is just a part of my autism.

Some days are better than others. Some I can do all my normal things I enjoy but other days I can hardly get out of bed. I find the headache is always there, sometimes it just aches and then sometimes it feels like my head will burst from the pressure.

It's debilitating and hard to live with but I'm trying my best to adjust to life with this.

I'm so sorry you suffer from headaches. Is there anything that helps? Is it better when you're stress free. Stress trigger's mine sometimes.

  • I don't get anything this bad, but I do often get a headache after a meltdown- I'm not sure whether it's tension or if I'm just dehydrated because meltdowns make me cry a lot and I can't remember to drink during the build-up/immediate aftermath. Maybe it's both.

  • Unfortunately it doesn’t matter if I have a physical period I still get migraines, the hormones in my body seem to cause them and I deal with them now so it’s not a big problem.

am more curious about the cluster headaches… or stress headaches I assume they are

  • Why would you choose to have periods when there are so many options to get rid of them? Try the various progestin options (pills, implant, shot, IUD) until you find something that gets rid of them. None of these contain estrogen so are not contraindicated by your migraines.

I get headaches if and only if I don't eat enough carbohydrates.
