Learning new skill is hard.

Hi everyone,

I've not posted on the forum for a long while, and usually only do when I am seeking information or reassurance etc.

I recently started Karate lessons with the wife and daughter and the main reason was to get my daughter into an after school club. Me and my wife decided to take part to help ease my daughter into it as it costs less than ten pounds for us three for one hour each week.

One of my problems that I have always suffered with has now come back to haunt me and it's the way my brain frustratingly processes what we are being taught.

I find it very difficult to process the Japanese language whilst following the moves of the sensei and feel very robotic and slow. It's very frustrating as I really want to learn but I feel like I cannot succeed which is annoying as I am a very determined person who hates any kind of second best at the best of times.

It all reminds me of football training when I was younger and I'd hate to be the first inline to do a training session without visually seeing what to do.

I felt embarrassed tonight because the Sensei said "do you want me to go slower"? So he obviously noticed I was struggling. In the end he said "I want you to mirror me" which I did, but I felt like because I was too focused on him and his moves that I couldn't take in and digest the language for the particular move.

I am thinking of going on YouTube to watch some basic demonstrations to try and help me for next week. Does anyone else struggle with learning at the same speed as their peers?

Any other ideas what I could do in my own time to try and become better for future lessons?

  • Like Debbie I struggle to follow any instructions given verbally. I believe it is due to auditory processing difficulties. My brain takes too long to process what is said to me and while I am trying to process something I miss the next thing that is said. I need to see something written in order to be able to understand and follow it.

Also I cannot focus on two sources of input at once. It is multitasking which I have always struggled to do. If I am focusing on watching the teacher then I cannot focus on listening at the same time.

Even watching and mirroring actions causes difficulties for me. Years ago I tried attending exercise classes. I would watch the instructor and try to follow the actions. However by the time my brain processed that and persuaded my limbs to move I was a few seconds after everyone else. It was as if I was inhabiting a different time zone to the rest of the class! I put that down to my dyspraxia.
