Fern Brady, Strong Female Character. Brilliant new book.

I listened to Ferns book this week, it’s a warts and all memoir of her life up to last year. I originally found her on a podcast called 1800 Seconds on Autism, she is a standup comedian, she was in a mental health unit in her teen years, how the system lets young people down is very sad. She wasn’t diagnosed until she was 30, The Lorna Wing Centre finally worked out what she had been struggling with, Fern did think about autism at an earlier age, a psychiatrist told her, “ no, you have a boyfriend and make eye contact,”  it’s an attitude that still gets me angry. Anyway it’s a really good read or listen, it knocked a useless whinge book off The Times best book top spot this week.

  • Had mine on pre-order. Part way through reading and wetting my pants laughing.

I love it when "names" like Chris Packham and Fern do this. They have a platform and therefore a voice many outside the autistic community will heed and learn something from, as much as we enjoy seeing our own experience reflected.

She's brave. She's bold and I love her for it.

Lorna Wing Centre diagnosed me too.
