Initial Assessment date confirmed - Expectations

Hi everyone,

I have finally received a date for my initial assessment after a year and 2 months. It will be a video call and last up to 30 minutes.

I am getting quite nervous about this and what to expect.

Can anyone enlighten me with their experience of this please?

  • I was assessed in December and got my results in January. My assessment was in person.  One of the things I was asked was why I had sought an assessment. I highlighted a few things that were concerns and challenges to me and led me to believe I might be autistic.

Remember that these people are trying to help you so be open and honest with them. If you have a tendency to ramble as I do just go with it as your communicating style will tell them lots about you.

listen carefully to the questions they are asking you and if you don’t understand then tell them that. Remember that there are no right or wrong answers. This is about you and your experiences.

I hope this has helped a little bit. Is there someone who can sit with you. My daughter was with me which was supportive and as she knows me well was also able to contribute some useful information.

As you are going to be at home make sure you have a drink if you think you might need it and equip yourself with a fidget toy if that will help you. You might make the assessor aware that you have that as that was something that was noted on my report.

    All the best.
