Do ADHD drugs affect sensory sensitivities?

I'm wondering about the effects of ADHD drugs on sensory sensitivities.  Yes, we could and should ask the GP but, given the total non engagement within my family plus the fear that any queries will lead to a withdrawal of prescriptions and result in a lack of options, there's a huge reluctance.

So...  Does anyone have any experience of these drugs, basically methylphenidate, and whether, in proving focus, they might also dial up interoception, with consequences for any issues with joints, nerves and mobility?

I personally don't feel comfortable with these drugs but I suppose that, were I in a position where my functioning depended upon them, I'd see them rather differently.  The patient information sheets of course list all sorts of things, but most of these are listed as rare so others' experiences would be welcome, if anyone is a willing to share?

  • Thank you, Deepthought.  This certainly gives me a way in to this issue.  I'll need a notebook in hand and will try to pare it down to the issues within our family, although at  a glance it looks as though the same themes keep repeating.

I want to be supportive of others' choices but am quite leery of these drugs and am treading a fine line when I think I can see some worrying developments that they attribute to other causes but which I can clearly see are noted effects for many people.  In fact, I find so much in life deeply troubling that it hinders me taking a more organised approach to learning, then having the facts onboard to offer up, should conversations go in that direction (I always need to be careful not to give unsolicited advice or give the impression I'm trying to take away someone's autonomy).

  • DeepThought.  You are a lovely soul and a very generous one with applying your undoubted talents to help others.  Your presence on these pages is greatly appreciated by me.

Thank you for this orderly and comprehensive contribution on Jenny's topic = VERY timely and helpful to me.

I was also fascinated to see your contribution to the now removed thread about after we have shuffled on to pastures new.  I left the cave some time ago and have spent quite a while with Thomas....who seems to speak to me quite deeply.  I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about such things, so if you ever fancy conversing about the matters of Gnowledge to which you speak, I would welcome the opportunity.  My PM is open to all - I prefer to speak of such matters in the quiet of the back rooms where the buzzing of daily life and other opinion does not derail my fragile focus.

    Thank you again.
