A Gap after diagnosis leaving me wondering if others experience this

Hi to everyone,

So I have been diagnosis as of September last year as ASC (autistic spectrum condition) and to be honest I feel a bit lost. I understand myself so much better being armed with this info, however i am  just sat thinking, now what? So i am unemployed and not educated but really want to better myself and move forward in a way so i am not bouncing back and forth between employment and unemployment. So my question is to others what did you do when you found out your diagnosis how did you move forward knowing this and what help is there as an adult, I am looking and in my area there is literally nothing. I don't want to ramble on to much, but just wanted to know what other people have done. As i would like to use this knowledge of my diagnosis as a positive thing (it is a positive thing) i dont know how to word what I mean.

Many Thanks

  • Hi,

post diagnosis (late 40s last summer) I am glad to have the situation confrmed. It has explained a great deal about my past experiences and why they happened.

Work related - there are many employers out there who actively recruit and support ASD people. https://www.scope.org.uk/employment-services/support-to-work might be able to help.

Education - perhaps contact local colleges and ask about thir adult education, plus support for autistic learners. They have a responsibility to make reasonable adjustments for you to be able to access studying.

Not all workplaces are autism friendly though. Mine isn't. Post diagnosis I asked for a referral to Cccupational Health, so that negative experieces I'd had in previous jobs would not be repeated, but my workplace refused. Six months on I have had a meltdown/burnout and was signed off for a month, costing them way more than any Occupational Health assessmnt would have been, plus they've had to refer me to OH anyway!

Best wishes for a positive and upward trajectory.

And most certainly best wishes for you also and all positive things.
