I've started wearing an 'I have Autism' badge on my coat

About 3 weeks ago i started wearing this badge just to go to my local Co-op at first because i was getting really anxious, unable to make eye contact and would sometimes fumble my words at the checkout. I also wrote a letter telling the staff i am autistic and that i may appear a bit anxious, odd and socially awkward.

I didn't do this because i wanted any special treatment but just so they could understand me a bit better. Also because i felt i was making the staff there a bit uncomfortable due to being so socially awkward.

Anyway i feel much more at ease now whenever i go in there and the staff seem to be too so it's had the desired effect

If you go to any shops regularly perhaps a letter and badge would help too?

  • It's so good to hear that the staff responded with kindness and are much more understanding now! I think I would have been worried that it would make me even more of a target depending on the situation/people- sadly not everyone is kind and means well... But it is so good to hear that they responded with understanding!
