I've started wearing an 'I have Autism' badge on my coat

About 3 weeks ago i started wearing this badge just to go to my local Co-op at first because i was getting really anxious, unable to make eye contact and would sometimes fumble my words at the checkout. I also wrote a letter telling the staff i am autistic and that i may appear a bit anxious, odd and socially awkward.

I didn't do this because i wanted any special treatment but just so they could understand me a bit better. Also because i felt i was making the staff there a bit uncomfortable due to being so socially awkward.

Anyway i feel much more at ease now whenever i go in there and the staff seem to be too so it's had the desired effect

If you go to any shops regularly perhaps a letter and badge would help too?

  • I have a small glass button badge, I know the puzzle pieces aren’t liked by everyone but when travelling abroad, it’s still recognised and doesn’t stand out. Trained staff know exactly why it’s worn. I went through an airport recently, I wasn’t Spoken to like a two year old by staff, we got escorted through to the private lounge, I do pay for the lounge but for the quiet and good food it’s worth every penny, it’s not actually that expensive.
