What's the best part time job for someone who is Autistic?

I am looking for a PT job. Before I got my assessment results. I hated working as a waiter and sales rep (Tekzone, Ryman). I would feel like I was acting, plus a lot of people were rude to me when I asked for assistants or for someone to explain or show me something again. So, does anyone have some ideas of what's a good PT job?

  • There are loads of jobs, but we aren’t all the same, so what fits me might not fit you. If you don’t like dealing with people on constant basis, then shop replenishment might work or being a postman. You could work behind the scenes in a bakery, or do any warehouse work, or picking orders for businesses, packing, cleaning, gardening, washing cars or windows, painting and decorating, stock checking, inventory management, online customer service…

  • That's a good point Catlover. My dream is to work in Film. However, the industry is so hard to be a part of. So, I need something in the background to earn income. Yet, when I apply, I am rejected or told they picked someone else due to experience. This includes jobs like packing, stocking, etc.

Well to be fair, as soon as a suitable role comes along you would be leaving the packing type job just as they fear, so they are right to think this way.

Is it fair? No, but having worked in trying to fill this sort of role in the past, I have an insight into how the recruiting people think.

You may want to consider using different versions of your CV when writing for these roles that re-writes your achievements as much lesser and so long as they are not outright lies. Remember to play down your achievements and your ambitions at interview as well - here is where your Autistic powers of masking can make a difference.

Also think about where you look for work in a slightly different way. If you can find a company that has regular contact with the business you want to be in then consider trying to use this to build a personal contact with someone who could get you onboard in the industry.

Maybe this will be working on a food truck on set, delivering supplies for set construction, cleaning the offices or whatever - the work will most likely suck but you should get to know the people over time and get to hear when openings may be coming up.

Just my thoughts on how I would approach it.

    Good luck.
