How many people have you disclosed diagnosis to?

I have my assessment in a couple of weeks having suspected for quite awhile that I'm on the spectrum. The only person I've disclosed my suspicion to is my partner, they filled out the 'person who knows me well' questionnaire thing for the psychologist to look at for the assessment as I didn't want to involve my family. Apart from him I've not discussed it with anyone. He actually doesn't even know that I've booked the formal assessment with the psychologist and i might not tell him. I think if I am diagnosed I don't think I'll tell anyone as I'm fearful of people treating me differently due to the stigma. I work full time, I don't think I will let work know, I feel like I don't need special adjustments.

I was just wondering if anyone else has kept this side of them private?

  • I've told most of my immediate family, a couple of friends (don't have many) and a whole bunch of people at work.  But I'm in a different situation as my job is a supporting disabled and neurodivergent children in school.  Many people there already have a good understanding and it comes up in conversation quite naturally, especially as it's my specialism.  I also think that it helps me be a better advocate for my pupils because it means I speak from experience.

Oddly, there have been several people that I have disclosed to that have then asked me about a family member who is has traits or is seeking an assessment.
