Support for NT partner with ASD wife

Hi

i have been fairly recently diagnosed with ASD and we are working our way through it however I wondered whether there were any support groups of recommended therapists in London who work with couples. My husband needs guidance and information and I feel he would respond better to this, rather than reading up via books etc

Thanks in advance!

  • Well first I want to say hello and welcome to the forum.

Second. Since sometimes the diagnosis can be a shock to the autist and others in their lives. It's important to realise you have always been autistic and that you always will be and that doesn't need to change other aspect of your identity in any great way, and neither does that mean you are any less worthy of love and respect.

Third. Just in case it's not been realised yet, you can only work through the event of diagnosis, you cannot work through the Autism in the sense of "getting over it" as some might say. You can only create methods for coping with the neurotypical normative society, and try to do so in ways that aren't detrimental to your mental health.

And lastly. I don't know about support groups for couples. Me and my otherhalf have always worked stuff out by communication by hook or by crook. But I have dealt with a range of individual therapists, and I'll just say: Be very wary of any so called "therapist" who is more interested in treating you as the "the problem" rather than the lack of understanding which may cause rifts in the relationship.
