Has anyone ever rung Samaritans?

I have, just once (so far). About three months ago. Never thought I would, until the last couple of years. I’d been carrying round their phone number flyer in my coat pocket for ages to the point it was, and remains, a frayed old reminder of a comforting ‘should you need us…’ I came very close to it again last night, which is why it’s in my mind. Instead I found some silly escapist distraction instead - often I can’t manage that when I’m too down/anxious/overwhelmed with lost causes but I was somehow able to flip that switch for a while - and I suspect I will again in the not to distant future. What an amazing service. When internal looping will no longer ‘help’, to speak it aloud someone, instantly (not waiting for a weekly appointment) and for a fluid duration really helps to no longer be a tree falling in the forest, just for a little while.

This place helps a lot too, of course!

Anyone else ever called them? If you’re comfortable saying that is.

  • I've never phoned them, but there are times, especially of a night when i'm sitting here alone, and desparately wish for someone to talk to. So i wouldn't i'll never call. Years ago when i was looking for voluntary work to do, Samaritans was one of the things i consided.

On a similar vein, this thread reminds me of another story.  I listen to a lot of local radio Merseyside. On the late night call-in people could call and talk about almost anything they wanted, lots were very funnny, lots very sad. After all if you're already on a downer, nightime makes it seem worse. One night a young lad about 13/14yrs called sounding almost suicidal, can't remember now the details but he felt he couldn't go home and had nobody to turn to, After  talking for a while the DJ said he had to play a record, but told the lad to stay there. It was only when the show went i wondered what had happended, the DJ had spoken for ages. The next night the story came out, the DJ was in the station by himself late at night, so he put his show on recording, locked the building up, then got in his car and drove the 3 or 4mls to the phonebox were this lad was. I don't know what happend, but it must have been serious to lockdown a radio station. I wonder, how many DJs would do that.
