Received my referral letter, I’m confused

Hi everyone. A few months ago my GP said she will refer me to have an autism assessment. I have just received a letter which says:

’Based on the information provided in the referral form, there is enough information to suggest that a screening appointment with our team is indicated. What happens next: you will be offered a screening appointment in approximately 5-6 months. If, after the screening appointment, a full diagnostic assessment is indicated there will then be a further wait before an assessment appointment is offered’

is this normal? Does this mean they don’t think I’m autistic?

  • That's completely normal, that's what most places do because the data collection and targets are done on referral to first contact not referral to final diagnosis/not diagnosis so a lot of trusts implemented a shorter triage assessment that's done first, and then another wait to full assessment if the triage assessment says they're probably autistic.

  • I think you are right,

I am currently going through the process with the NHS as an adult. After talking with my GP he referred me to a mental health nurse who did an initial screen consisting of two appointments after which I was referred for assessment. I've just had the referral confirmation letter along with another set of screens to send back. It acknowledges I'm now on the waiting list but that it can take a long time to get an appointment. The nurse I talked with initially indicated the wait would be up to 2 years once I'm on the list.
