Received my referral letter, I’m confused

Hi everyone. A few months ago my GP said she will refer me to have an autism assessment. I have just received a letter which says:

’Based on the information provided in the referral form, there is enough information to suggest that a screening appointment with our team is indicated. What happens next: you will be offered a screening appointment in approximately 5-6 months. If, after the screening appointment, a full diagnostic assessment is indicated there will then be a further wait before an assessment appointment is offered’

is this normal? Does this mean they don’t think I’m autistic?

  • You’ll have a hour’s chat with your local mental health team, they will talk about your history,. It will be these guys that decide on a ASD, ADHD,  bipolar etc assessment.

there is a 6mth wait for your screening.. then if they decide if you qualify for a further assessment, then it will be another 6mth wait until ASD makes contact with you by post.  But then your ASD will take approximately 18mths for a diagnosis.

a autism diagnosis costs thousands of pounds and they need to make sure you qualify before they put you through
