Indecisiveness

I wasn't aware until yesterday that difficulty with making decisions was a reasonably common aspect of life for autistic people. I'd never bothered to examine why I have such difficulties, perhaps because they've been a feature of my life for so long. And the problem isn't only focused on important decisions - for instance, if I'm going to a shop, I spend the entire journey fretting over choosing to buy oranges or tomatoes; a trivial decision hardly loaded with unforeseeable, dire consequences that make me wary in advance. After I had an advice session recently, I had to write to the professionals, asking them to make a decision for me about my attending/not attending a future session. It must have seemed bizarre to them.

Any advice or anecdotes about personal experiences of indecisiveness would be welcomed by me. Slight smile

  • The following is a prime example of just how indecisive I can be...

Prior to visiting our local convenience store, my son will ask if I fancy a treat (something the food police would not approve of). My answer will almost always be, "Yes!" but I can never quite decide what it is I actually want. It's left to my son to try to narrow it down, which frequently drives him to despair. Wink

The conversation that plays out between us often goes something like this...

Him: Would you like a packet of biscuits or a chocolate bar?

    Me: Yes!

    Him: Which one?

    Me: Umm, I don't know. I can't decide.

Him: Shall I get both then?

    Me: Yes!

Him: OK, what kind of biscuits and what chocolate bar do you want?

Me: Umm, I'm not sure. Laughing
